@ Nannetta, I totally agree, black backgrounds just seem to hard on the eye’s for me, I did however find that they work great for adsense.

My Tip: Create a good linking structure so visitors can easily find other related pages on your website.

Make web headings clear and consise. Leave witty or quirky headings to newspapers where readers have more time and you can be more indulgent.

also try to make it easy for customers to find your products. if a big site, include a search box.
And keep the number of clicks to target (eg. clicks to sale) to a minimum. Ideally about 3-5 clicks to purchase.

The tips all sound so commonsensical, but then you remember that common sense isn’t all that common. One of my beefs is with bloggers who insist upon using a black background; it’s not so much that I find it hard to read, usually, but that it’s just hard on the eyes. It may not be as bad as using, say, a red background, but it can be overbearing all the same. And don’t get me started on those sites that make you play hide-and-seek when you try to obtain information.

Another tip we found useful on our website is to break text into small paragraphs, use headings to break up the text and bullet points for easier readability. Readers tend to scan text on a website so you need to make it as easy for them as possible.
