The Rise Of The Tablets

Ever since the launch of the Apple iPad sales in other computers have taken a hit, especially notebook computers.

Tablets

Given the ease of use, weight and dimensions, this is hardly surprising. When the iPad was announced we at WinWeb made the decision to make our new apps work natively in the Apple iPad browser. With that we continue in the tradition of true cloud computing applications that you do not have to install any software, all you need is a browser.

A whole raft of new tablets are available today and more are being announced. Focus have created a nice infographic about the development of the tablet market looking into the future – just click on it to see it bigger.

I think that tablets are ideal small business IT tools, especially if you use cloud applications to run your business. Some of the benefits are long battery life, high security (remote wipe and locate), easy online software updates, to name but a few.

Many are not only Wi-Fi enabled but also 3G ready, meaning you can take them on the road (or the beach) and still be in business, totally hassle free. I think you should have a look at them as a serious small business tool.

Not Every Cloud Has A Silver Lining

Much is being said about so called APIs, software bridges, mashable technology an other little innocent sounding descriptions like – “our software plays nicely with this software”!

IMO – truth is – there is nothing “nice” about it! Let’s back up a little, what does it all mean?

What it means is this, the software vendors are asking you, the client, to connect their online software to another vendors software, in order to enhance your software functionality – this is a fragmented solution – where you data ends up in multiple places.

There are many reasons why this is being asked of you, some are:

  • They do not have the necessary resources, financially or otherwise, to produce a software application that provides a complete “integrated” solution for all the customer’s needs.
  • They lack the know how to produce an “integrated solution” and by offering fragmented solutions to the client they try to overcome their short comings.
  • They lack the understanding of the dangers to the clients data by following this fragmented approach!

Don’t get me wrong, APIs have their place, we use them to complement our clients experience with our software, but we never share our clients information with third parties or ask them to do so. This, in my view, leaves customers not only at the mercy of the old “It’s not us, it’s their problem!” excuse when things go wrong, but also puts clients data in many different places with often unclear legal and technical implications.

But, worst of all, when these APIs fail, and believe me they do, it can take days to get them fixed and back up running again – during which time the small business suffers financially, time wise because of duplicated work load and performance wise, because everyone is focused on the problem and not on the business.

The only way to go is with “integrated cloud computing“!

Are You Risking Your Business By Taking Risks With Your Data?

Cloud computing

Digital data loss can have severe consequences for any small business that is reliant on good recordkeeping. Losing customer data could mean that you don’t have any means to contact them or perhaps cause you to be left without details of financial transactions. This would either make it difficult for you to invoice them or leave a big hole in your financial records that would be difficult to account for at the end of the tax year.

If a small business does not take adequate data security measures, there are numerous things that have the potential to go wrong. A computer virus or trojan will almost certainly eventually infect unprotected computer systems that are connected to the Internet, causing damage or data loss. An antivirus / spyware solution and firewall is needed for every business computer to reduce risk.

Even computers that don’t have viruses can develop problems. Hard drives in particular have the potential to fail at any time and their lifespan can be quite unpredictable. Data loss like this can often be avoided by using external hard drives to backup your information, however if your business was to be hit by flooding, fire or theft then you would be likely to lose these too.

Some business owners use USB memory sticks to keep a record of data. Although these are often much longer-lasting than traditional hard drives and very convenient for data storage on-the-go, they are also very easily lost because of their small size.

The best solution for a small business is actually to embrace new technology and choose a cloud solution. This allows the business to store all of their information online far more securely than they would be able to offline.

Being In Business Means Being Online

Collaboration

It is my belief that in order to succeed, businesses should have a distinct online presence. Being online enables small businesses to sell to customers across the country, even around the world, not limiting their customer base to those just around their chimneybreast.

I have spoken before about small businesses that want to stay small, and know that growth isn’t necessarily the measurement of success for small business owners. However, having a business website is not necessarily just about growth; it can be about maximizing your potential as a small business, no matter if your business is you selling cupcakes from you kitchen, or running an office with 10 staff.

People often say to me that their small business doesn’t have a website as it’s too complicated, takes up too much time or is too expensive. None of these problems have to be true; with the importance that websites hold for small businesses in mind, WinWeb.com have designed a range of one page websites, fully designed and populated with content, and that can be online in 30 minutes. All you as a small business owner is to do is choose your design, and provide details of your business.

Your business being online is about more that having a website though; having an online presence includes activities such as blogging, social networking and having active discussions with people within your arena. Increasing awareness of your business this way costs nothing but time, and can actually be fun!

As I have mentioned previously, I am looking to help small businesses to hold conversations, engage with each other and learn from what is happening in the big business world. It is for these reasons that when I was asked to contribute on Nasdaq.com I eagerly accepted; knowing that there is much that small businesses can learn from the big businesses on the Nasdaq.

My articles on the Nasdaq will focus on commentary and comparisons between how big businesses are acting and performing and the ramifications and lessons that are in these activities for small businesses. I hope you will join in the discussion; I hope to see you there!

My 20 Years in the Internet Business – A Resume!

winweb-www.jpg

This year marks my 20th year in this industry, I can honestly say, I’ve been in this business longer than most. The 20 year realization came to me this morning while answering comments of some of my readers and it made me start reminiscing about the last 20 years, my most frustrating and most successful years.

The year was 1989 when I first considered selling ‘Internet services’ in the form of electronic mail boxes, but ended up just being part of a small group of business people using this ‘new’ technology – by dialing up and exchanging electronic mail. The advent of the World Wide Web utilizing hypertext documents, introduced by Tim Berners-Lee in the same year really sparked my imagination.

It would be a few years before the World-Wide-Web had developed to a point where my vision of having business solutions on the web became a possibility. But for me the Internet was always about small and micro business, following the big corporates into the global market economy and for the developing nations to participate in global commerce.

With this goal in mind I founded WinWeb.com in 1994 and we went live early 1995 with our first website, we had a news portal, job portal, online shopping world and much more. In the following years I would learn that having good ideas, that later on made many companies into global brands, is no good if you are too early and don’t have the funding to last until the technology is accepted by the mainstream.

In 1995 I got ‘distracted’, and worked with a great bunch of people to run Nacamar Group Plc., and we build one of the biggest and fastest growing ISP in Europe, which we sold in 1999 at the hight of the Dot-Com boom to become the international part of what remains of Tiscali today. Following the sale of Nacamar, I learned if you don’t have passion and drive, no amount of money in the world can make you a success. While the sale of Nacamar made me, and many others rich people, the development of Tiscali/World Online remains a big disappointment for me to this day.

BUT, I now had the financial resources to make WinWeb into what I always intended – a platform to help small business start-ups to run and focus on their business. And while I was still way to early with my online business services I now had the financial means to last the course and what a learning curve it has been.

So here we are today, the online software, web application, software as a service, web 2.0, cloud computing and many other names that have come and gone in the past decade, this market is finally maturing. WinWeb has been a source of enormous achievement for me and my team, we help small business owners everyday to stay in business and focus on their business objectives. I am proud of my team, spread over three continents, helping me to achieve my 20 year old vision everyday. As in any venture you can’t do it alone, I’m thankful and grateful to my whole team.

As always, some frustrations remain:

  • 70% of small businesses do not have a web-site and losing out every day because of it;
  • governments the world over still do not understand how to use online technology to help small business and business start-ups;
  • SPAM and other online anti-social behavior is degrading all our online experience;
  • many software vendors just try and port old software models onto the new Internet medium, these models are ultimately destined to fail;
  • the battle between paid-for and free is raging, and I’m afraid it will lead to a new divide inside the information society;
  • governments and telcos alike fail to provide internet back-bone services of enough capacity to help small business to compete no matter where they are;
  • computer viruses and malware are a menace and I hope for better OSs and net-appliances in the future to deal with these issues before it gets to customers,
  • many still do not understand that ‘working from home’ is now a real possibility, good for local communities, good for the environment, good for our family, especially the kids, good for the whole planet because it is eco-friendly.

These and more challenges remain, but we have come a long way already and I’m reminded of that often when I watch my son or his generation interacting the way they do, with global social networks, getting information, keeping in touch and many doing business online. In conclusion, I believe the last 20 years have been good years for the Internet society, let’s work on the next 20 years and tackle some of the challenges on my wish-list and those of others.

So, what next? I can’t wait to find out, can you?

3UK Network Launches Mobile WiFi Router For Mobile OnlineOffice Workers

3mb-3uk-mobile-wifi.jpg

3Uk are about to release a device which allows you to create your own mobile wifi network – or “MiFi” as 3 calls it.

You may ask, why should I care? Well, working from home or a small office is one thing, but being able to work anywhere with more than one computer is quiet another.

Having a mobile wireless router will allow you to work with a few colleagues on live events, providing a live twitter feed for excample, or using our OnlineOffice on a building site without data connectivity.

Given the right circumstances, this mobile wifi router can be one of the best small business tools you ever invested in, except for WinWeb’s OnlineOffice of cause.

With it’s Skype linkup and other innovative products 3 is certainly one of the more innovative players in the mobile market, good for us and good for them.

If the technocratic class often invokes technology, it is because these inanimate objects can take on a trajectory of their own and so cover for the manager’s inability to give leadership.”

A small business quote a day keeps you thinking, inspired and entertained.

Clearly, there is great potential to improve efficiency using Internet-based e-commerce strategies such as electronic marketplaces and business-to-business supply chain management. But no one really knows how big those productivity gains will be, how long they will take to be realised, and who will be the ultimate beneficiaries.”
