Some mentioned problems in finding people to talk to about the business and future plans. I know the problem, been there.

In the UK we have now a new organization, the Institute os Enterprise and Entrepreneurs IoEE (ioee.co.uk), which can help you find a mentor for your business. These mentors are business people themselves and are great to talk to.

With changes in both the type and shape of modern businesses from large top down organisation to flatter more distributed groups, collaboration is key to building teams that will be able to deliver what customers want.

However, I find that tracking down real collaborative partners can be tricky as finding people and businesses with the same vision and values isn’t easy.

I think you’re correct. The smaller the business the more important is it so seek out others to bounce ideas off of and check your sanity…

Hi Stefan. I’d almost say that voicing ideas you have about your business is essential to it’s success. I’ve been a one man band for a while and while you have loads of ideas in your head, until you get them “out” either on paper or even better to bounce off of someone else, they get jumbled, confused and usually not used. If I were going into business again now, I’d look for a partner for us to bounce ideas off of. It’s vital to productivity and direction.

For small businesses communication and collaboration are everything. And without the burden of red tape it is much easier for small businesses to be in touch with their customers and communicating more effectively internally. More and more small businesses are embracing social media and social mobile phone apps to communicate more effectively, boosting innovation and agility. And the same technologies, perhaps more importantly, close the gap between business and customer. Businesses can now engage with their customers socially. At present big business hasn’t quite got this right. But SME businesses are perfectly positioned to benefit from more effective customer communication.
