Nice article Stefan, this is what I know...

Web based ERP software harnesses and leverages the low cost technologies to which the web has given birth and is simply an evolution of the traditional ERP system both in terms of a significant reduction in costs and complexity plus the added bonus of being accessible from any web browser.

Just like it’s more expensive counterparts, web based ERP software gives small business owners and their managers better control and a real opportunity to change the performance and fortunes of their companies. Web based ERP software offers the smallest of businesses what was once the privilege of large businesses – an opportunity to enjoy and leverage the power of a single information system at a tiny fraction of the cost of it’s monolithic predecessors.

Lets face it SaaS rocks!!

"...Enterprise Software is no longer the luxury of large corporations" well said. SaaS made software delivery simple and affordable for Small Business. SMEs are showing great interest towards Online Payroll (Eg:- Greytip Online, Intuit etc), OnDemand CRM (Eg:-Salesforce, Impel...), Cloud based Project collaboration tools etc

I believe another aspect overlooked is that several of the SaaS application are 'lite' versions of the on-premise app. The economies of scale and change in delivery model help costs, but an SMB/SME may not buying the full-product. There is a history of ISVs that have traditionally sold a 'reduced' version of product into the SMB segment.

It will come as no surprise that I'm in broad agreement with your assessment of the Software-As-A-Service landscape. Our own company (MXSweep) serves the SME market with email protection solutions as a managed service. We find that small to medium businesses are increasingly aware of the advantages to this model.

Our customers welcome the opportunity to have ready access to Enterprise Level Spam Filtering engines that were heretofore beyond reach of SME IT Security budgets. This is only made possible by the economies of scale leveraged by the Software-As-A-Service model.

Benefits include reduced staff time spent on non-profit generating tasks. As one IT Manager told us, speaking of his own business focus, "We know what we're good at, and its not Spam Filtering, we just want someone to make the problem go away, it makes no sense for us to install, maintain, and upgrade hardware and software in-house if it can be done off site"

However, it isn't just that the SaaS pricing model is more attractive. That is a bonus certainly, but the real benefit lies in the increased levels of performance, resilience, and accountability that a managed services provider can deliver.
