Brighton: The Silicon Valley of the United Kingdom?

Brighton: The Silicon Valley of the United Kingdom?

We are all aware that the digital revolution has been fully embraced throughout the United Kingdom. As the digital age continues to evolve, there are always some locations which tend to stand out from the rest. One shining example of such technological trends is the monumental growth of Brighton in recent times. This region has increased its aggregate economic output by no less than 12.1 per cent over the past three years. Not only is Brighton now ranked as one of the top ten UK cities in terms of growth, but many experts predict that it will be within the top four emerging cities during the next decade.

A Digital Hub

One of the main reasons for such growth revolves around the role that Brighton plays within the digital community. These roots can be traced back as far as the dot-com bubble. Initially, the economic landscape was primarily occupied by website designers. However, this field soon widened to include other emerging areas such as consulting and marketing. These trends were also noted by countless organisations, as many start-up firms emerged from Brighton while other businesses moved into the metropolitan area to leverage the expertise to be encountered. Some notable firms which are examples of this progression include:

Brilliant Noise
iCrossing
Brandwatch

However, what are the primary reasons that this growth is so very pronounced when compared to other major urban centres across the United Kingdom? Let’s look at some of the most important determining factors.

The Educational System

One factor behind the digital competency within Brighton likely stems from the fact that there are two local universities present. We also need to take into account the seaside location of Brighton. Many students will arrive here, pursue a degree and choose to remain thanks to an excellent climate. This is also the reason why residents of Brighton are some of the most qualified in terms of an educational background and a formal degree. This has resulted in two unique situations. First, the business base of the community has increased by an astounding 25 per cent over the past five years. Secondly, it is said that the aggregate value of services and goods produced within Brighton is no less than £744 million pounds. Official reports now indicate that Brighton has likewise dramatically risen through the ranks in terms of total GVA (Gross Value Added) output.

A Strong Digital Foundation

Of course, economics alone will not necessarily equate to digital competence. We also need to appreciate that many sectors such as CAD, engineering and maths have all enjoyed a strong presence within Brighton. So, it should come as no great surprise that this region has now embraced the digital age.

Good Business Sense

Above all, many enterprises within major cities such as London simply want to relocate to an area that is less urbanised and still contains all of the talent that they require. Although it is still possible to come across an independent consultant working out of a local coffee shop, the fact of the matter is that a growing number of pioneering firms are employing Brighton as their base of operations. It is also interesting to note that a number of financially oriented companies are emerging throughout Brighton. This may indeed prove to be a powerful benefit when working in synergy with digital organisations. The bottom line is that Brighton appears to have a very “bright” future. Considering that annual growth is expected to reach 2.1 per cent, the sky could very well be the limit.
